Benne Seed Wafers
Description
A favorite in the Low Country since colonial days. Benne (the Bantu word for sesame) was brought from East Africa and planted in the south.
Ingredients
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 1/2 sticks margarine (3/4 cup)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 cup toasted benne seed (sesame seeds)
Methods/steps
- Cream the margarine and sugar. Add the beaten egg. Sift flour with salt and baking powder. Add to margarine and egg. Add vanilla and toasted benne seeds.
- Drop by 1/2 teaspoon on cookie sheet lined with wax paper.
- Bake at moderate oven (325F). Cook quickly.
- Allow to cool on counter for 1 minute before removing wax paper from pan. Allow the cookies to cool on the wax paper a few minutes more. Remove from wax paper.
